I first encountered the word “shall” while watching the movie Shall We Dance? It immediately caught my attention, not because of its meaning, but because it was unfamiliar to me. As someone born and raised in France, and later living in Israel, English has never been my first language. Curious, I turned to my husband for an explanation. He gave me a brief summary, but my curiosity only deepened.
The word “shall” has an interesting history. Its roots are found in Old English, where it originally meant “to owe” or “to be obligated.” Over time, the meaning shifted, and it became a more formal way of expressing intent or suggestion. Today, you might come across it in literature or classic films, but it’s rare in everyday conversation.
What I found fascinating is the elegance and intention that the word “shall” brings to a statement. It isn’t just about asking a question or proposing an idea; it’s about commitment, a sense of purpose, and perhaps even a touch of grace. It’s an invitation—one that carries the weight of possibility.
So, what about you? Shall we write?
This simple question holds so much potential. When we ask ourselves, “Shall we write?” we’re not just questioning our readiness; we’re making a commitment to ourselves, to our stories, and to the words that are waiting to be written. We’re inviting ourselves into a space of creativity, discovery, and expression.
Writing, much like dancing, is an art form—a way to move through life’s rhythms and find beauty in the steps, even when they feel unfamiliar. It’s a chance to explore, to make mistakes, and to find joy in the process. And just like the elegant use of “shall,” our writing can bring intention and meaning to our stories.
Shall we take that step together?
Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just beginning to find your voice, the invitation is the same. Let’s embrace the act of writing with purpose, with grace, and with the commitment to share our unique journeys. Writing isn’t just about putting words on a page—it’s about capturing the essence of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.
Shall we write? I believe the answer is always “yes.”
